changing window weather strip

Posted by on Sunday, December 05, 2004 (UMST)

I can't change the outer window weather strip because the window doesn't roll all the way down blocking access to two screws needed for removal of strip, and I'm having trouble removing the handle to roll window up/down...can someone help?...thanks for your help!

Actually, you need a special tool to do it.  Rodney Dickman sells it at www.rodneydickman.com

Good Luck!

The tool Robert mentions is a small 90 degree phillips head screw driver.  Rodney Dickman does indeed sell on but you could also make one your self.  To remove the window crank you need another tool, available at Checker, AutoZone and other places to remove a GM window crank.

Good Luck.

Another way

You don't necessarily need that tool but it might make it easier. However I've heard the method I used is easier. If you remove the window stops you can roll the window all the way up to the top and slide it back (I had to tap it with a rubber mallet). This enables you to access the two screws. I had a hard time getting the window to go back. Since my outer door skins were pretty much off anyway, I removed them for easier access. I had to use my finger to guide the roller in and out of it's track. I'm not sure how people do it with the door skin on. I know this is a little late to help, but maybe it will help someone. There is a detailed description of this method at http://www.fieronews.com/Content/pid=5.html

The Fiero Store sells them as do some  on line suppliers (GMPARTSDIRECT and others).  If you buy from an online source you need the part number and it is different depending on year made.  The Fiero Store sells them by year.

Good Luck

weather strip (Dew wipes)

Actually, I've never removed those screws...I have just (carefully) used a 'sharp' screwdriver & a hammer to cut the metal part of the dew wipe under the screw...make a couple of small cuts on the new one to slide it over the screw that remains. There are more than enough screws on each side of those two....you don't really need them.../\/\
